What are the DVI formats?
- DVI-D or True digital video.
This is used for direct digital connections between the source videos and LCD monitors. It offers a faster and high quality image because of the characteristics of digital format. All video cards offer a digital video signal in the first place, then it is transformed into analog at the VGA output. The signal that flows to the monitor and then it is transformed into digital signal again. DVI D gets rid of the analog transformation process and enhances the connection between the source and the display.
- DVI A or High res analog
This is used to carry a DVI signal to an analog display system. The most common use of this format is connecting to a VGA device because DVI A and VGA bear the same signal. Some quality loss is involved in the digital to analog transformation hence, using a digital signal is advised whenever possible.
